INTERNSHIP
The Houston Chamber Choir, with Artistic Director Robert Simpson, is Houston’s premiere professional choral ensemble. Now beginning its twelfth season, the choir is winning praise internationally for its innovative programming and musical excellence.
Job Description:
Intern (Small stipend, 15 hours per week)
Accountability:
The Intern reports to the Managing Director.
Description:
The Intern will gain professional experience in a music management setting. The Intern will develop specific skills, based on the Houston Chamber Choir’s needs, the focus area and expertise of the intern, and the time of year in which the internship is conducted. Intern will also perform additional tasks related to their internship.
This is a part-time internship of fifteen hours per week for a minimum period of 12 weeks. A stipend is provided to those accepted to the internship program and the Houston Chamber Choir will assist interns in obtaining University credit when applicable.
Fall/Winter Internships
I. Festival Intern. This Festival, organized by the Houston Chamber Choir and sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and Shell, will take place January 25-27 at Houston Baptist University. It will involve 30-40 choirs from community choirs to school choirs; from church choirs to University choirs. This intern will need to be available during the festival.
Responsibilities will be to help with:
a) Coordinating public relations and marketing for the festival.
b) Working with the graphic designer on materials for the festival.
c) Coordinating activities of the singers/musicians.
d) Assisting visiting artists.
e) Contacting the press.
II. Education Intern. The Houston Chamber Choir has recently teamed up with Young Audiences in bringing music education to the schools. We have also been invited by Da Camera Houston to perform a Family Concert.
Responsibilities include helping with:
a) Creating an educational program to be used in the schools.
b) Contacting organizations outside Houston for outreach activities.
c) Researching grant opportunities for outreach activities.
d) Coordinating with artists.
Winter/Spring Internships:
I. Marketing & PR Intern
Responsibilities include:
a) Writing a marketing and public relations plan.
b) Implementing the plan.
II. Development Intern
Responsibilities include:
a) Researching development opportunities.
b) Writing a development plan for private donors and foundation.
c) Implementing the plan.
Additional Responsibilities
1. Meet biweekly with supervisor to review issues, project progress, and work experiences.
2. Submit a 2-3 page written evaluation and summary of the internship at end of the internship.
4. Responsible for filling out own time sheet in a timely manner.
5. All staff members are expected to answer phones, interact with visitors and assist each other with projects as needed.
6. Assist with ongoing care of running the office, which includes data entry and providing coffee for visitors.
7. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Prefer some education in either business administration or music.
Skills/Abilities:
1. Strong organizational skills.
2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
3. Ability to use PC and standard suite of office software.
4. Research skills utilizing both traditional and digital resources.
5. Ability to work independently on assigned tasks, seeking help as needed.
